Ettekandes kirjeldatakse üldjoontes põgenemise põhjuseid ja tulemusi 1944–1991. Miks, kuidas ja kuhu põgeneti ning kuidas pagulased ennast organiseerisid? Kuidas rahvuslikult tegutseti, säilitades oma keelt ja kultuuri, selgitades maailmale Eesti saatust ja võideldes Eesti vabaduse eest?

Pärast pagulaste saabumist USA-sse Teise maailmasõja järel asutati mitmesuguseid organisatsioone. Suuremates keskustes loodi tegevuse keskpunktiks Eesti Maju. Asutati eesti organisatsioone välisvõitluseks Eesti vabastamiseks, täienduskoole ja kirikuid.

Tegemist on lühifilmiga “Põgenemine”, mis valmis spetsiaalselt näituse “Ründed ja ränded” jaoks. Film valmis fotograaf Eric Soovere unikaalsete fotode põhjal, mida ta tegi sel ajal, kui ta koos oma perega Eestist 1944. aastal põgenes. Film jutustabki nende teekonnast vabasse maailma, mis kestis 1944–1949.

12.20–12.40 Ettekanne “Miks põgeneti”, Ülle Ederma – ERKÜ
Ettekandes keskendutakse üldistele põhjustele, miks põgeneti. Kuna peamine põhjus oli hirm uue Nõukogude okupatsiooni ees, siis räägitakse ettekandes sellest hirmuvalitsusest esimese Nõukogude okupatsiooni ajal. Lisaks antakse ülevaade sellest, miks ettekande pidaja pere pidi põgenema ja mõnest Ülle Ederma enda mälestusest viimastest päevadest enne Eestist lahkumist.

12.40–12.50 Arutelu

12.50–13.10 Ettekanne “Nii kaugele Euroopast kui võimalik”, Maie Barrow – AESL
Pärast sõja lõppu kogunesid eestlased Saksamaal põgenikelaagritesse. Kui tuli aeg sealt lahkuda, valisid paljud endale uue kodumaa nii kaugel Euroopast kui võimalik, sest hirm Nõukogude Liidu režiimi ees oli suur. Austraaliasse tuldi kas töölepinguga või sponsori abil. Kui lepingu aeg sai täis, kogunesid inimesed suurematesse keskustesse, kus moodustati eesti seltsid, et säilitada nii eesti keelt kui ka eesti kultuuri ja pidada välisvõitlust. Kasutati igat võimalust, et hoida Eesti olukorda nähtaval nii austraallaste kui ka Austraalia valitsuse silmis. Nüüd, rohkem kui 60 aastat hiljem, säilitatakse endiselt eesti keelt ja eesti meelt.

13.20–13.40 Ettekanne “Pagulaste suurürituste roll omakultuuri hoidmisel”, Iivi Zajedova – TEKS
Teise maailmasõja sündmuste tõttu põgenesid paljud Eesti Vabariigi kodanikud Nõukogude okupatsiooni eest vabasse maailma. Ettekande peatähelepanu all on erinevates väliseestlaste kogukondades oma kultuuriga tegelemine ja selle oluline osa kõigil järgnevatel aastakümnetel kuni tänase päevani.
