VEMU tähistab laste ja noorte kultuuriaastat

Oma ürituste programmiga on VEMU püüdnud Eestiga ühte jalga käia. Üks viis seda tema on hoida silma peal teema-aastatel, mille Kultuuriministeerium igal aastal välja kuulutab. 2013. aastal tähistasime mitmete ettevõtmistega kultuuripärandi aastat. Muusika-aasta puhul 2015 kuulutasime välja kogumisvõistluse, millest tegime kokkuvõtteid 2016 suvel Roman Toi 100. sünnipäevale pühendatud sümpoosionil. Aasta 2016 oli merekultuuriaasta. Siis käis meil külas Marko Matvere, kes laulis koos Peep Raunaga merelaule ja pajatas merekarujutte.

2017 on kuulutatud Eestis laste ja noorte kultuuri aastaks. Sel puhul kutsusime külla Eestis tuntud kirjaniku, tõlkija ja libretisti Leelo Tungla. Leelo Tungal jõudis Torontosse 27. aprillil ja ta veetis siin tegusa nädala.

Saabumisjärgsel päeval viisid Kaja Telmet ja Helge Kurm külalise Kanada suurimat vaatamisväärsust, Niagara koske imetlema. Laupäeval tegi Leelo Tungal retke Eesti Majja, et osa saada AKEN Hiigelbasaari melust ja veenduda sellest, et Toronto Eesti Ühispangas saab eestlane oma asjad emakeeles aetud.

30. aprillil toimus VEMU 6. tuluõhtu, kus Leelo Tungal oli aukülaliseks ja peaesinejaks. Kirjanik jagas kuulajatega oma lapsepõlvemälestusi ja mõtiskles eesti keele ja kultuuri püsimise üle. Lisaks Leelo Tunglale astusid üles Tartu College’i president Jaan Meri ja VEMU peaarhivaar Piret Noorhani. Torontos tegutseva catering firma The Edible Story chefid Brian Cheng ja Alanna Fleischer valmistasid külalistele imemaitsva õhtusöögi. Peale õhtusööki sai kuulata uus jazzansambli “The Fakebook Four” esinemist. Osa ansambli koosseisust oli Toronto eestlastele juba tuttav: Toomas Heinar (bass), Evi Heinar (klaver), Vincent Teetsov (trummid). Saksofonist Selchuk Shun esines eestlaste ees esmakordselt.

Leelo Tungal kohtus Torontos ka Bibliograafia Klubi ja Tartu College’i elulugude rühmaga, esines T.E.S. Täienduskoolis ja vanadekodus Ehatare. 3. mail pidas ta Tartu College’is loengu “Meie muinasjutuline emakeel. 25. aastat Sten Roosi muinasjutuvõistlusest.” Sten Roosi muinasjutuvõistlust korraldatakse Sten Roosi (1970-1991) vanemate Ann ja Ants Roosi poolt oma soja mälestuseks. Tänavu saab võistlus 25-aastaseks ja Leelo Tungal on olnud selle üks peamisi käimalükkajaid ja läbiviijaid.
