Opening of the New Season at VEMU

On September 24th, VEMU opened the 2016 fall season and celebrated Tartu College 46. The popular lecturer among Toronto Estonians Prof. Jüri Kivimäe gave the Dr. Vello Soots Memorial Lecture on the topic The Charm and Trouble of the Estonian Language. From Müller’s Sermons to Google Translate. 2016-2017 is Professor Kivimäe’s last year holding the position of Chair of Estonian Studies at the University of Toronto.

The lecture was followed by the opening of the exhibition Free Lines. Portraits from the Restored Republic of Estonia by Andrus Peegel. The exhibition marked 25 years since the restoration of Estonia’s independence. Arne Roosman’s murals were also officially opened. This mural, meant to introduce Estonian history and culture to Torontonians, was mounted on the Bloor St. facing facade of Tartu College in July 2016.
