The renowned composer’s works will be brought to life through film screenings and live performances from September 20 – October 1.

On Thursday August 29th 2013, 7.30 pm at Tartu College in Toronto dr. Marin Laak (Estonian Literature Museum) gives a lecture on the topic of “Kalevipoja” sünniloost ja saatusest tänapäeval” (The Birth Story and Destiny of Kalevipoeg Today).

On Tuesday August 27th 2013, 7.30 pm at Tartu College in Toronto dr. Sirje Kiin gives a lecture on the topic of “Juhan Viidingu elu ja luule” (The Life and Poetry of Juhan Viiding).

Until recently paper letters were the only possibility to stay in touch with family members or friends, who were forced to leave their homeland.

Chairman Aleksander Peel of the Estonian Society in Australia had the idea to establish Estonian archives in Australia in 1952. Real work with the archives began in 1952 when Dr Hugo Salasoo became the head archivist and held this position for 38 years until 1991. In the autumn of the same year, just before his 90th birthday, the archivist passed away. The archives moved into the Sydney Estonian House in 1994 and Maie Barrow became the head archivist.

BaltHerNet organised a highly successful information session from 7-10 July 2013, on Estonian databases and correspondence, all primarily focused on the expatriate Estonian community.

On June 27th Stanford University Libraries in partnership with Baltic Heritage Network, National Archives of Estonia and VEMU/Estonian Studies Center in Toronto held a conference on collecting and researching Estonians abroad.

A group of Latvians visited VEMU on 13 June. They were shown the collections, and the use of volunteer-run archives and libraries was discussed. The Latvians are also considering starting their own archival workgroup. The staff at VEMU is hoping to be of some help to them and wish the Latvians much success in their upcoming archival work.

Aet Tran-Tõnissoo and Peeter Väljas from the National Archives of Estonia formed the fifth team in the past five years to tackle the Estonian archival material at the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC), University of Minnesota. Their mission, funded by the IHRC, Estonian National Archives and the Compatriot’s Program was to process some of the vast holdings during a month long sojourn.
