Homeland Estonians lend a helping hand at the Immigration History Research Center in Minneapolis again
Co-operation between the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) in Minneapolis, USA, the Estonian National Archives and the Baltic Heritage Network began at the Baltic Heritage Network summer school in 2008 where the Director of the IHRC, Ms. Elizabeth Haven Hawley, participated. Within the framework of the current project, fonds of the Estonian Archives in the US (EAU) held at the IHRC are being arranged and described. The aim of the project is to facilitate and increase the usage of the Estonian archival collections at the IHRC and the study of (émigré) Estonian history and culture through increased awareness. In the first week of October, the board of the Baltic Heritage Network , composed of Gatis Karlsons (The General Management of the Latvian National Archives), Linas Saldukas (The Lithuanian Emigration Institute), Piret Noorhani (The Estonian National Museum), Birgit Kibal (The Estonian National Archives) and Karin Kiisk, met in Riga. The board visited the Lativan National Archives and were introduced to Daina Klavina and her colleagues Vera Guzanova, Inese Kalniņa, Aija Gutmane ja Guntis Kraulis. On the occasion of the visit to Latvia of Ian Wilson, president of the International Council on Archives (ICA), the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a seminar on ”Archives and Memory Institutions” in Riga on Aug. 31, 2009. The seminar was jointly arranged by the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO, and the Directorate General of Latvia State Archives. On July 7th-10th, 2009, an international conference on the Baltic archives abroad was held at the Estonian Literary Museum in Tartu. This conference was a continuation of a previous conference held in the summer of 2006. The contacts made at the 2006 conference resulted in the founding of a new organisation in January 2008: the non-profit association Baltic Heritage Network. The aim of the Baltic Heritage Network is to develop co-operation between the different national and private archives holding cultural treasures of the Baltic diaspora, and to ensure their accessibility to the public, their preservation and their study. On April 25th 2009 the National Library of Sweden (Kungliga Biblioteket) hosted the seminar Mapping and Preserving the Audiovisual Heritage of the Baltic Diaspora in Sweden which was organized by the Baltic Heritage Network in co-operation with the Baltic Audiovisual Archival Council (BAAC), National Library of Sweden and the Estonian National Congress in Sweden. The event was supported by the Compatriots Programme (Ministry of Education and Research, Estonia) and the Nordic Council of Ministers.

In March 2009 two employees of the National Archives of Estonia – Gristel Ramler and Birgit Nurme – described the archival materials of the Estonian Archives in the United States at the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) in Minneapolis. The project was financed by BaltHerNet in the framework of the Compatriot Program (project “Archival Assistance for Communities of Foreign Estonians and the Memory Institutions of New Homelands”). The project was supported also by IHRC and the Estonian Archives in the United States (EAU). The ultimate objective of the project was to start long-term co-operation for improving the accessibility of the EAU materials. Negotiations started in the BaltHerNet Summer School of 2008 where also Elizabeth Haven Hawley, the Director of the IHRC, participated. The Belgian small town Mechelen hosted the conference for non-governmental organizations active in the field of heritage – Heritage Care through Active Citizenship – on March 23-24 2009. The 135 international and 45 local delegates represented a wide spectrum of the NGOs active in the field of heritage. The participants represented local, regional, national and European organizations, various umbrella organizations, and networks.
Compatriots from Estonia take a fresh interest in Canadian Estonians' heritage
A group of workers from Estonian memory institutions, members of Baltic Heritage Network (BaltHerNet), visited Toronto at the end of October. BaltHerNet’s aim is to promote cooperation between the national and private archives, museums, libraries, research institutions, public associations and organizations collecting and studying the cultural heritage of the Baltic diaspora in order to guarantee the preservation and research of as well as an access to this historically valuable cultural property. The organization develops international and national cooperation networks, administers and develops an information portal on the Baltic heritage, Baltic Heritage Network (www.balther.net), organizes conferences, seminars, and workshops.
Marcus Kolga and his documentary "Gulag 113" at the Estonian National Museum on August 14, 2008
The Estonian National Museum hosted a meeting with the young Estonian-Canadian filmmaker Marcus Kolga in the framework of events dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. Kolga talked about the history of Estonia and the world as well as about exploring and documenting it. The audience was shown his documentary Gulag 113. The author of the film is Eduard Kolga, his grandson Marcus Kolga is the director and Rein Kotov is the director of photography.
Summer school "Estonian Cultural Heritage Abroad II"
The traditional summer school ”Estonian Cultural Heritage Abroad II” was held in Käsmu on June 17-22, 2008. The summer school was organized by the Baltic Heritage Network’s Estonian working group. Also this time the summer school was sponsored by the Compatriot Program (Estonian Ministry of Education and Research).
Conference on the owner of Orto, Andres Laur, at the Estonian Literary Museum
It is not so easy to find the name of Andres Laur, the owner of the publishing house Orto, in Estonian reference books. As known, it occurs only in the 1938 lexicon Eesti majandustegelased (Who’s Who in Estonian Economy). At the same time books published by him fill the bookshelves of Estonians living abroad as well as in the homeland. On April 23, on the occasion of Andres Laur’s 100th anniversary, the Estonian Literary Museum held a conference in Tartu where the participants discussed Andres Laur’s contribution to exile Estonian and Canadian culture and remembered him as an active though conflicting person. The conference was sponsored by the Tartu Culture Foundation.

The traditional information day, this time aimed at the keepers of the cultural heritage of the Estonian diaspora in Estonia, was held on April 15, 2008. On January 19, 2008 an information day on archival matters was held in Hamburg, Germany. The information day was organized by the working group of the Estonian archives abroad and the Academic Society of Hamburg Estonians, a member of the Estonian Society in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Visit of Estonian Prime Minister to the Hoover Institution Library and Archives
On November 30, 2007, Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip visited Stanford University, where he gave a speech on the Estonian economy to an audience at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace. During his time at Stanford, the prime minister was given a presentation on Estonian history as reflected in the collections of the Hoover Institution Library and Archives.
Compatriot Program Conference in Tallinn November 12-13, 2007
The Compatriot Program Conference, organized by the Ministry of Education and Research, was held in the National Library in Tallinn on 12-13 November. The conference gave an overview of the previous activities of the Program and discussed the main standpoints of the new program. The participants came from 12 countries.

The summer school on Estonian cultural heritage abroad was held at Koke, Võru County, August 21-25, 2007. The summer school was organized by the working group of the Estonian archives abroad and the Karl Ristikivi Society.
