Prof. Schmalstieg’s Correspondence Archive Donated to Lithuania

On July 11, Roxanne Bolinger, the daughter of the famous Indo-Europeanist and Baltic studies specialist Professor William Riegel Schmalstieg (1929–2021), and her family from the United States of America visited the Lithuanian Language Institute.

Prof. Schmalstieg was a US linguist at the University of Pennsylvania. He studied Baltic languages and had excellent command of Lithuanian, was a foreign member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (2006), an honorary doctor of Vilnius University (1994), and a loyal friend of the Lithuanian Language Institute. The linguist visited Lithuania many times, maintained close ties with Lithuanian scholars, was a long-time member of the editorial boards of the Institute’s journals, Acta Linguistica Lithuanica and Archivum Lithuanicum, and was the author of many articles and reviews.

Prof. Schmalstieg’s relatives met with the Director of the Institute, Dr. Darius Ivoška, Head of the Center for Research on Written Heritage, Dr. Birutė Triškaitė, Senior Researcher Dr. Mindaugas Šinkūnas, Researcher of Ancient Writing Dr. Virginija Vasiliauskienė, Senior Researcher of the Center for Research on Standard Language Dr. Danutė Liutkevičienė, and Vilnius University Lecturer Birutė Palovienė.

By decision of the family of Prof. Schmalstieg, the linguist’s correspondence archive was donated to the Institute. Roxanne Bolinger signed the transfer documents during her visit to the Institute.
