Young People of Estonian Descent Reconnect with Their Roots at Summer School

August 19, 2025

From 3–8 August 2025, the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory welcomed 18 high school and university students from nine countries – including Ireland, Sweden, the USA, Germany, the UK, Belgium, Australia, Finland, and Estonia – to its annual summer school for young people of Estonian descent.

Held for the second consecutive year, the programme offered participants a rich mix of history, culture, and personal discovery. Over five days, they took part in lectures and workshops on Estonia’s recent history, explored the Estonian National Museum, paid their respects at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism in Maarjamäe, visited the Ennuksemäe Forest Brothers’ bunker, and toured the Estonian Parliament building on Toompea Hill.

A special highlight was the opportunity to dive into the Institute’s digital archives in search of their own families’ stories – a chance to piece together the threads of their heritage.

The Estonian Institute of Historical Memory extends heartfelt thanks to the participants, lecturers, and partners who made the summer school an inspiring journey of learning and connection.
