High recognition to Estonian-Canadian turntablist Erik Laar

November 4, 2024

In October, Toronto’s own Erik Laar received a Raadio 2 Special Award at the Estonian Folk Music Awards. ‘Etnokulp’ is what the awards are called in Estonian. The artists receive a real wooden ‘kulp’ – a ladle, which is as Estonian as an award can get.

From a pandemic-time live-stream at Estonian Museum Canada VEMU archives, through the stages of Estonian Music Week in Toronto to the stages at Jazzkaar and Tallinn Music Week this year, we are delighted to see Erik´s creations being recognized in Estonia.

Estonian Music Week team is so happy to have played a small role in Erik’s journey with his creations that mix Estonian runo songs and diaspora music with big bad beats and a whole lot of turntable magic. Congratulations!
