Juta Kõvamees Kitching In Memoriam

Juta Kitching (10.05.1935 Muhu, Estonia – 18.02.2025 Vancouver, Canada), a long-time leader and member of the Estonian Archives in Vancouver, has passed away. We will remember her as a dedicated and friendly colleague. Our sincere condolences to Juta’s loved ones and community friends.

Exhibition “Memories from Altai Krai” on display at VEMU Estonian Museum Canada

On February 11, a new exhibit was opened at VEMU Estonian Museum Canada. Artist Liisa Kruusmägi and curator Anneliis Lepp from Estonia discussed the origins of the exhibition via Zoom.

VEMU’s Second Translation Competition is Dedicated to The Year of the Book

VEMU Estonian Museum Canada organized the first translation competition in 2021, which turned out to be surprisingly popular: 26 people from 8 different countries participated. The winner was Tiina Otema from Toronto, who has, to date, produced her first translated work — Juhan Pütsepp’s “The Moon is Like a Golden Ship,” 2024.

Discussion Evening at VEMU: Aigi Rahi-Tamm and Katariina Sofia Päts (University of Tartu)

In January, associate professor Aigi Rahi-Tamm and doctoral student Katariina Sofia Päts from the University of Tartu visited the VEMU archives to do research work. They also held a discussion on the topic “Three Estonians: dialogues between home, refugee, and deported Estonia.” The event can be viewed here.

Research Project “Navigating Post-Exile: Transformations and Transitions in the Latvian Exile Community after 1991”

In January 2025, researchers from the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Latvia initiated a three-year project to examine the post-exilic experience of Latvian exiles following Latvia’s regained independence in 1991.
